…sorry, I won’t do this again and will stick to posting images but this drives me absolutely bonkers and it’s easily the most frustrating thing I have been seeing with my 6 weeks on Tumblr.
If you lift an image from a website and put it on your feed, put on your big boy/girl pants and add either the artist credit or where you got it from. If someone else is doing all the heavy lifting and getting it online, take the 30 extra seconds to source and write in that information as that is the absolute least you should be doing.
So often I’ll see something on well trafficked websites and, literally 10 minutes later, certain folks will re-post the image with no source information or artist accreditation and it then gets liked/re-blogged 100’s of times.
If it is a piece of artwork, the artist would love the exposure. Give them that.
If it is an image from a larger article from elsewhere, someone cobbled it together and is probably getting paid by the click through/page views. Give them that.
If it is from someone’s personal blog/livejournal/etc., the author would feel encouraged to continue to do similar posts with the influx of traffic and attention. Give them that.
Three folks off the top of my head that do it right are http://thisisnthappiness.com (who does a great job in passing on source info in an engaging way), http://dbsw.net and http://herochan.com (who bend over backwards and almost over-inform but better too much than too little). There are others and sorry I missed you.
To the high profile/influential tumblrs that are not doing this, you know who you are. Help out the people who are helping you have interesting feeds. You can do this.
